We are carrying out a full review of our Council Tax single person discounts, increasing our efforts to identify fraudulent behaviour.
In B&NES, there are currently around 27,000 Council Tax payers that are receiving a 25% single person discount. Using intelligent data matching, we are comparing records to check the validity of the discounts awarded.
Residents found to be receiving a discount they're not entitled to will have the discount stopped and backdated as far as the evidence supports. We can impose a civil penalty or in serious cases, prosecute those found to be cheating the system.
