Background
The A36 Beckford Road crosses over the Kennet & Avon canal tunnel at the north end of Sydney Gardens in Bath. Here the road is supported by a stone arch tunnel known as Bath No.1 Canal Tunnel. The tunnel has been affected by a structural issue that was identified during planned works to improve walking and cycling links to Bathwick St Mary Primary School, King Edward's School, Sydney Gardens, the Holburne Museum, Great Pulteney Street and the canal.
The canal tunnel is an historic structure and repairing it is a complex job. The council, Canal & River Trust, Historic England and the contractor are working closely together to carry out further surveys, investigation and design work and secure the necessary approvals before permanent repairs can begin.
It is anticipated that this work could continue into 2027.
Update 4 November 2026
Investigations and assessments are continuing, including the following:
- Review historic and inspection records.
- Undertaking laser scanning, photographic, heritage, and structural surveys to establish the full picture to inform the design process.
- Confirm what consents are needed between the main stakeholders including the council and the Canal & River Trust.
- Implement any temporary measures considered necessary to protect the structure and maintain public safety.
- Carry out regular engineering inspections to monitor the structure condition.
- Working together for the safe passage of boats.
The council is not yet able to confirm any potential diversion routes. Please check this website for updates.
Update 12 October 2026
A structural issue affecting a tunnel beneath the A36 Beckford Road in Bath, which was identified during planned works to improve walking and cycling routes.
As a precaution, the canal and adjacent towpath at the north end of Sydney Gardens have been closed to boats and pedestrians. An eastbound one-lane road closure is in place as engineers continue to assess the situation.
