Highways Services, more than halfway

Insights and quick wins

Reading time - 3 minutes

We opened the Sprint 3 review by reminding those following the project that we are now 60% through Discovery.

There has been continued email analysis which included discussions about Team mailboxes and how they are used; where the emails are coming from and who they are going to.

The Service Design team have now captured over 200  insights organised into 35 themes.  Alongside capturing and recording insights in our Insight Library, a number of quick wins are also being worked on.

One quick win is the pragmatic use of social media to alleviate pressure on the service. The Service Design team spotted the effectiveness of social media for Road Safety campaigns and supported the submission of a business case for a B&NES Road Safety twitter account.

Another quick win we were able to execute against was a technology review. The review pulled out some issues experienced by Highways Inspectors in the field, which included:

  • Finite storage of photos on devices
  • Screen size
  • Mobile signal in rural areas
  • Limitations of talk & text phones

As a result of this technology review, we will be running a smart phone trial in the field.

System mapping is progressing well as we discover how the systems that manage street lighting through to drainage and flooding talk to each other, and where manual transfer of data occurs.

In a very meta moment this blog was introduced to the project cohort as our method to showcase the Discovery work. It also illustrates how the Council is working to improve services and show transparency to customers.

The sprint review turned its attention back to email and the key findings of the analysis so far.  Then went on to cover recent research discussions with our Highways delivery partner which have been invaluable. Volker have been open to what the project is aiming to do which is fantastic.

The project has built up momentum, with only one more research and analysis sprint to come. After that, the creating begins.
