Check flood risk and make a flood plan
You can check your flood risk and sign up for flood warnings to prepare for flooding incidents.
You should also make a flood plan so you know what to do if a flood happens.
Check your insurance
It can sometimes be difficult to find insurance coverage if:
- your property has suffered flood damage in the past
- there is history of flooding in your neighbourhood
- you are within an identified flood risk area
Find guidance on getting insurance
Install flood protection measures
You may want to install Property Level Flood Protection equipment in your home. Examples of flood protection equipment include:
- temporary flood gates
- flood doors
- non-return valves
- air brick covers
- water pumps
These measures may not completely prevent flooding, but can help to reduce its impacts and make it easier to recover.

Work as a community
Working as a community is a sensible way to help reduce the impacts of a shared flood risk. Select a topic below to find out what you can do.
To prepare for flooding, you can nominate a Local Flood Representative to work with our Drainage and Flooding team. The Representative must be nominated by a Parish Council, Bath Residents' Association Group or Bath Ward.
The representative will need to gather information about drainage issues and pass this on to our Drainage and Flooding team. Issues to report include:
- land drainage
- surface water flooding
- groundwater flooding
- watercourse flooding
The position is not a flood emergency role. A Representative will report ongoing local land drainage and flooding issues so we can identify solutions and improvements.
The Representative does not need to have knowledge of drainage or flooding, and does not need to be connected with the Council in any way.
