Royal Victoria Park pond

Use this page for updates on the status of the Royal Victoria Park pond that has recently faced issues with pond liner leaks, a very dry summer, and an unsustainable water source.

What's the problem?

The Royal Victoria Park pond was previously fed by the Georgian Springs.  However, the Georgian Springs were deteriorating and causing localised flooding issues for several properties. To prevent further flooding, the water was rerouted. Adding to this, the recent hot, dry summer compounded an existing leak in the pond liner, causing the water to evaporate and the pond to dry out.

Potential water sources

We are unable to use a bowser to refill the pond. It would need to be refilled too often in dry summers and would be too costly to replenish. It could also be considered a frivolous use of water if our summers continue to get hotter and drier.

We are also unable to use water from the River Avon to top up the pond because there could be a risk to the pond ecosystem if we introduce water from an entirely new source, with its own ecosystem.

How we'll solve the problem

We're exploring options with Wessex Water to identify a longer-term water source for the pond. We've allocated funding to support the cost of this study and we are exploring further funding opportunities to reline the pond and support the groundwork needed to direct the new water source into the pond.

How long it will take

In the short term, the pond will refill with the Autumn and Winter rainfall (ducks and other waterfowl have already returned, with other wildlife expected to return in the spring). Longer term, we hope to restore a sustainable water source during 2026. If we're successful, the next phase of work will focus on relining the pond and creating new habitats for wildlife in and around the pond. We don't expect the project to be finished until at least 2027.

What happens next

We intend to launch a public consultation to get ideas and feedback from our community to help determine the long term character of the pond.
