Clean air and greenhouse gases are often talked about together, but they’re not the same thing. Both issues are important, but they affect us in different ways.
Clean air (air quality) is about the air we breathe every day. When it’s polluted from things like smoke or tiny particles from vehicles, it can harm our health.
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are different. They trap heat in the atmosphere. When too much of them build up, the planet warms, leading to more extreme weather, rising sea levels, and long‑term changes to our climate.
While these issues are different, they are closely connected. Some air pollutants can affect the climate by increasing or decreasing warming. At the same time, climate change can influence air quality, for example, higher temperatures can worsen pollution levels and increase their impact on health.
