The Mary Kinross Charitable Trust

This Trust generally makes large grants to the same portfolio of charities in England, Scotland and Wales each year and does not encourage unsolicited applications.

The Mary Kinross Charitable Trust awards grants to registered charities in England, Scotland and Wales that are working in the areas of:

  • Community Development
  • Health
  • Medical research
  • Penal affairs, and
  • Youth

The Trustees consider that, by their policy of using the income available to make fewer but more substantial grants to carefully researched recipients, they provide more benefit than they would by making many more but smaller grants to organisations that they did not research so fully.  The Trust has stated that it aims to continue his policy for the foreseeable future.

When the Trust makes a major grant, core office costs are often included, which may enable the recipients to apply for other sources of funding.  In response to the increasing difficulty of raising funds that many of its long-standing grantees are facing, the Trust has continued to concentrate its funding on those organisations.  This means that the Trust has to disappoint the great majority of applicants who make unsolicited appeals.

The majority of new grants are recommended by the daughters and grandchildren of the Founders, who also have delegated authority to agree small grants up to a total of £25,000 per annum.  All other grants are discussed and agreed at meetings of Trustees.

The Trust tends to focus its funding on the same group of charities each year and generally does not encourage unsolicited applications.  However, it does make a few new grants each year.  Charities that consider they represent a good fit with the Trust’s objectives should enquire about the prospect of grant support by writing to the Administrator at the address below.

The Trust prefers dealing with written correspondence rather than telephone calls or emails from applicants seeking grant support.
