Promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the UK and Japan

The Sasakawa Foundation’s Grants Programme has the overarching objective of promoting mutual understanding and cooperation between the UK and Japan through financial support for activities in the following fields:

•    Arts and Culture (over 50% of all grants awarded are usually made against this category).
•    Humanities and Social Issues (including Japanese studies).
•    Japanese Language.
•    Medicine and Health.
•    Science, Technology and the Environment.
•    Sport, and
•    Youth and Education.

Revenue grants are normally for £1,000 - £2,000 for smaller scale projects and between £5,000 and £6,000 for larger projects.  Grants can be awarded for up to 3 years in some instances.  In particular, the Foundation seeks to support projects that demonstrate innovation, uniqueness and which will have a lasting impact.

Grants are awarded for seed/pump-priming activities and not core operational costs.  The Foundation focuses its support on projects involving groups of people in both the UK and Japan rather than just one nation.

There is a matched funding requirement for both smaller and larger grants as the Foundation’s grants rarely cover the full project cost.
Only British and Japanese organisations and residents are eligible to apply for a grant.

Further information, guidance and an application form is available on the Foundation’s website.

Our UK office holds three annual awards meetings, with application deadlines on 31st March, 15th September and 15th December for consideration by our Trustees in May, November and March respectively.
