Christian Grants Programme

Revenue grants of up to £10,000 per year for up to 3 years are available for UK-based initiatives that promote the wellbeing of Anglican Clergy.

The Henry Smith Foundation (formerly the Henry Smith Charity and still registered as such with the Charity Commission for England and Wales) has a new strategy for the period 2025 to 2030 entitled “Elevate Your Impact”.  The strategy ‘reaffirms its commitment to the people and organisations driving change across the UK’.

Between 2025 and 2030, the Foundation will focus on supporting people facing some of life’s toughest transitions by offering flexible, long-term funding through its new funding programmes:

  • Building independence – helping young people move into adulthood with confidence, skills and hope.
  • Getting started – supporting families to give their young children a strong start, and
  • Safer futures – supporting people to rebuild their lives after abuse, displacement or prison.

Its Christian Grants Programme offers revenue grants starting at £10,000 per year for up to 3 years or up to 5 years in exceptional circumstances (applicants seeking funding for 4 or 5 years are required to contact the Foundation’s Clergy team before applying).

Grants can be used for projects and initiatives that provide a means for Anglican Clergy to be supported or take preventative measures to ensure they remain healthy and effective in their ministry.  Examples of the type of project that could be supported include (please note that this is not an exclusive list):

  • 1-1 mentoring schemes
  • Online or in person pastoral care
  • Peer support programmes, and
  • Retreat houses to provide restorative time for clergy

The Foundation welcomes applications from churches, charities, and not-for-profit organisations affiliated with the Church of England, the Church in Wales, the Scottish Episcopal Church, or the Church of Ireland with an annual income of under £1 million.

Applications may be made at any time, with the Foundation committing to making a decision in under 5 months.

To apply, start by completing the Eligibility Checker on the Foundation’s website.  This will will confirm whether you meet the headline criteria for the programme before taking you to the application form.
