Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Who it's for

This funding is for homeowners who want to change their boiler for a more energy-efficient one.

To be eligible for the scheme, all of the following must apply to your home or household:

  • You have a fossil fuel heating system (gas, oil or electric).
  • Your property has a valid Energy Performance Certificate, with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.

What it's for

You can get large reductions on the cost of buying and installing some types of boiler or heat pump:

  • £7,500 off the cost of an air source or ground source heat pump
  • £5,000 off the cost of a biomass boiler

How it works

If you're eligible for the scheme, your installer will do all of the hard work for you:

  • making an application for payment on your behalf

  • giving you a quote upfront with the grant value deducted from the figure you pay, so you never have to pay out money and claim it back.

  • keeping in touch with Ofgem on most matters related to the scheme

  • confirming to Ofgem when they’ve installed your heating system

  • claiming the money from Ofgem at the end of the project

Installers are responsible for passing on the discount that the BUS grant provides to you, the property owner.

How to apply

For a heating system to be eligible for the scheme, it has to be fitted by an installer certified by the Microgeneration Certification Service (MCS).

Use the MCS website to find your installer

We recommend you contact and get quotes from several installers before agreeing for one to do the work.
