Bath Recycling Centre redevelopment overview

We are planning to deliver a new recycling centre for residents in Bath and North East Somerset. The new facility will give residents in the city easy access to waste and recycling services and enable housing development at the existing recycling centre site.

The new Bath Recycling Centre at Locksbrook Road will replace the existing provision at Midland Road and complement Keynsham Recycling Hub. In line with our environmental priorities, as laid out in our climate and ecological declarations, the scheme has been designed with carefully considered sustainability measures built in from the start.

You can find out more about the history of the project, where we are now, and what comes next, on our Project Timeline page.

Aims of the project

The new Bath Recycling Centre will serve the residents of Bath and North East Somerset, particularly those in central and eastern Bath for whom Keynsham Recycling Centre may not be readily accessible.

The move to Locksbrook Road will enable the site of the recycling centre at Midland Road to be redeveloped for new affordable and market homes. The Locksbrook Road site is not suitable for residential development.

The new location for Bath Recycling Centre

The new site is the current Street Cleansing depot on the Locksbrook Road Trading Estate to the west of the city centre. The site is already owned by the council. You can read more about the planning for this site on the Bath recycling centre public engagement website.

What you can take to the new recycling centre

The new recycling centre will accept:

  • residual household waste
  • cardboard (including items too large for kerbside collection)
  • soft furnishings
  • bulky waste
  • garden waste
  • wood
  • scrap metal and large electrical items (except fridges, freezers, TVs and monitors)
  • dry recyclables: plastic, paper, cans, glass

Hazardous waste, fridges, freezers, TVs and monitors should be taken to Keynsham or Old Welton Recycling Centres. Small electricals and batteries can be collected via kerbside recycling.

Note: Waste will be received in 40-yard roll-on-roll-off skips. No processing will take place on site.

Access, parking, transport and traffic

We carefully considered how to eliminate queueing on the surrounding streets and to ensure access to the new site is available to all. Read about our plans for access, parking and traffic at the new Bath Recycling Centre on Locksbrook Road.

Sustainability and tackling the climate crisis

The new Bath Recycling Centre places our Climate and Ecological Emergency policy at its forefront. We aim to reuse existing infrastructure wherever possible so that the overall carbon footprint of the development is minimised. Technical considerations and planning documents

We appointed a professional team of specialist consultants to ensure essential technical matters were considered. You can view the documents in the planning application:

  • Drainage Plan
  • Flood Risk Assessment and Drainage Strategy
  • Land Quality Assessment (Contamination Phase 1 Investigation)
  • Environmental factors

The layout ensures operational areas are away from residential properties.

Next steps and timeline

Construction is expected to start in 2025 and complete in 2026. The Midland Road site will then close and be redeveloped for housing.
