Shielding the rear of a lantern

If the light is on the same side of the road as the affected property it may be possible to provide limited shading on some types of light. Modern lanterns are, however, designed to distribute the light onto footways and roadways, and not into properties.

To request that a lantern be shaded please call Bath & North East Somerset Council Connect on 01225 394041, making sure you give the street lighting column number (found about 5ft up the column) and a good description of what is affected.  A member of the department can then assess the situation and take the relevant course of action.

Alternatively, you can write to us at:-

Street Lighting Department, Floor 2 South, Riverside, Temple Street, Keynsham, Bristol                                           BS31 1LA or email us on

Please make sure you specify the column number of the street light and a description of what is affected (i.e. "top windows of house number 10")
