Historic England High Street Heritage Action Zones

The Historic England High Street Heritage Action Zones (HSHAZ) Programme is a place-based scheme focusing on market towns and is designed to secure lasting improvements to historic high streets. The scheme will support sustainable economic & cultural growth on and around high streets, enhance local historic character making streets vibrant places. HSHAZ will do this through physical works to buildings, including repair, reinstatement of lost features and conversion to new uses including residential.

B&NES Council secured HSHAZ funding for both Keynsham and Midsomer Norton following a competitive national grant fund bidding process.

 

Midsomer Norton

The Midsomer Norton High Street HAZ Project will deliver £2m of investment in three project areas through the provision of:

  • A new multi-use Market Square at The Island and improvements to the adjacent Town Hall and shop frontages;
  • Improved pedestrian links to the High Street, particularly from the South Road Car Park;
  • High Street shop frontage and signage improvements.

Funding is also allocated to develop and implement sustainable and inclusive activities such as pop-up shops, outdoor markets, community events and business engagement.

Keynsham

The Keynsham High Street HSHAZ Project will deliver £1.3m of investment focused on:

  • public realm improvement and shopfront enhancements focused on the upper High Street and Station Road, areas which contain many historic buildings.

In addition to the HSHAZ scheme,  public realm improvements will deliver a one-way public realm scheme for the High Street Core that will create wider pavements, safe cycling, improved pedestrian connections to Memorial Park and car parks, improvements to Market Walk  & Temple Street, will declutter street furniture and improve multi-model wayfinding and information across the town centre.
