Progress up to July 2023

In 2019, the ward boundaries in the city of Bath were changed.  The changes to the boundaries have resulted in some paths now being in different wards from the ward in which they were originally recorded in.  Abbey Ward is no longer in existence and all paths which were recorded in the two Definitive Map Modification Orders (DMMOs) for Abbey Ward are now in either Bathwick, Kingsmead, Lansdown or Walcot Ward.  The figures listed below are based on the new ward boundaries.

The following wards have been researched: Weston, Lansdown, Lambridge, Newbridge, Kingsmead, Abbey, River & Towpath Paths, Walcot, Bathwick, Twerton, Westmoreland, Widcombe, Southdown and Moorlands.  Information regarding the 21 DMMOs made to date as part of the project can be found below.

Future Research

There are still approximately 65 possible paths which have yet to be researched in the city of Bath, with an approximate length of 11.6km.  Due to ward boundary changes in 2019, the remaining paths are located in parts of Odd Down and Combe Down.  A map showing the paths still to be researched can be found here. 

Current Research

The area that used to be the Lyncombe Ward is currently being researched (including a small section of Oldfield Park).  A map showing the 22 paths (with an approximate length of 3.2km) can be found here. 

Ward 14 - Moorlands (and a small part Oldfield Park & Westmoreland)

A Definitive Map Modification Order (No. 20) was made on 9th March 2023 to add 21 public rights of way to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Moorlands, Oldfield Park & Westmoreland wards.

There are currently 20 public rights of way in Moorlands Ward, with an approximate length of 1.8km and 16 public rights of way in Oldfield Park Ward, with an approximate length of 1.4km.  Follow the link to view a map of the paths.

Ward 13 - Southdown (and a small part of Twerton)

Two Definitive Map Modification Orders (No. 18) and (No. 19) were made on 7th September 2021 to add 29 public rights of way to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Southdown and Twerton wards.  

Order No. 18 comprises of 15 public rights of way and Order No. 19 comprises of 14 public rights of way.  Both orders were confirmed on 13th January 2022.

There are currently 41 public rights of way recorded in Southdown Ward, with an approximate length of 5.1km.  Follow the link to view a map of the paths.

Ward 12 - Widcombe

Two Definitive Map Modification Orders (No.16) and (No.17) were made on 21st March 2019 to add 33 public rights of way to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Widcombe ward.  

Order No.16 contains 16 public rights of way and was confirmed as made on Thursday 27th June 2019.  To view the Confirmed Order, please follow the link. 

Order No. 17 contains 17 public rights of way.  Objections were received to 3 footpaths included in Order No.17.  The Order was split and the unopposed part was confirmed by Bath & North East Somerset Council on 26th September 2019.  To view the Confirmed Order, please follow the link.  

The objected to part of Order No. 17 (comprising of 3 paths) was referred to Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for determination in January 2020.  The Planning Inspectorate determined the Order by Written Representations and confirmed the objected to part of the Order as made for footpaths BC53/5, BC53/6 and BC64/7 on 27th January 2022.

There are currently 43 public rights of way recorded in Widcombe Ward, with an approximate length of 11.3km.  Follow the link to view a map of the paths.

Ward 11 - Westmoreland

A Definitive Map Modification Order was made on 2nd November 2017 to add 17 public footpaths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Westmoreland ward.  The Order was confirmed on 1st February 2018.

Ward 10 - Twerton

A Definitive Map Modification Order, Twerton (No.12 - 2017), was made on 19th July 2017 to add 7 public foopaths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath.  The Order was confirmed on 20th September 2017.

Two Definitive Map Modification Orders, Twerton (No.13 - 2017) and Twerton (No.14 - 2017) were made on 16th August 2017.  Each Order contains 21 public footpaths to be added to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in.  The Orders were confirmed on 11th January 2018.

Ward 9 - Bathwick (and a small part of Combe Down)

A Definitive Map Modification Order was made on 12th August 2015 to add 17 paths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Bathwick and Combe Down wards.

Two representations were received to the making of the Order for footpath BC54/40 and an error was discovered in the drafting of the route included for BC64/1.

The unobjected to part of the Order (comprising of 15 paths) was confirmed without modification on 20th January 2016 by Bath and North East Somerset Council.

The objected to part of the Order (comprising of 2 paths) was referred to the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for determination in March 2016.  The Planning Inspectorate determined the Order by Written Representations and confirmed the objected to part of the Order with modifications to footpath BC64/1 and confirmed the Order as made for footpath BC54/40 on 30th May 2017.

Ward 8 - Walcot

A Definitive Map Modification Order was made on 5th March 2014 to add 16 public rights of way to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Walcot Ward.

The Order was confirmed on 9th July 2014.

Ward 7 - River & Towpath

A Definitive Map Modification Order was made on 16th March 2011 to add 21 public rights of way to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath along and including the river path and towpath. 

An objection was received to all of the paths included in the order.  The objection to 6 of the paths included in the Order was withdrawn.  The Order was severed and the 6 unobjected to paths were confirmed on 4th September 2013. 

The objected to part of the Order contained approximately 7.9km of path network in various wards and was referred to the Secretary of State for the Environment for determination in June 2015.  The case was determined using the Written Representations procedure.  The Planning Inspectorate confirmed the objected to part of the Order (with modifications to footpaths AQ92a and AQ193) on 27th January 2017.

Ward 6 - Abbey

Two Definitive Map Modification Orders were made on 13th August 2008 to add 44 public footpaths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Abbey Ward.

The orders were confirmed on 22nd October 2008 and can be found here: Order No.7 and Order No.8.

Ward 5 - Kingsmead

A Definitive Map Modification Order was made on 12th December 2007 to add 22 public rights of way to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Kingsmead Ward.

The order was confirmed on 19th March 2008 and can be viewed here. 

There are currently 62 public rights of way recorded in Kingsmead Ward, with an approximate length of 3.8km.  Follow the link to view a map of the paths.

Ward 4 - Newbridge Ward

Two Definitive Map Modification Orders were made on 15th November 2006 to add 43 public footpaths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Newbridge Ward.

The Orders were confirmed on 25th April 2007 and 43 public footapths were added to the DMS.

Ward 3 - Lambridge

Two Definitive Map Modification Orders were made on 5th July 2006 to add 36 public footpaths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Lambridge Ward.

The Orders were confirmed on 15th November 2006 and 36 paths were added to the DMS.

Ward 2 - Lansdown Ward

A Definitive Map Modification Order was made on 10th August 2005 to add 14 public footpaths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Lansdown Ward.

The Order was severed and the 12 unobjected to paths were confirmed on 16th November 2005 and added to the DMS.

A Public Inquiry was held in April 2014 and the other 2 paths included in the Lansdown Order were confirmed on 25th June 2014 by the Secretary of State.

Ward 1 - Weston Ward

A Definitive Map Modification Order was made on 23rd March 2005 to add 23 public footpaths to the definitive map and statement (DMS) for the city of Bath in Weston Ward.

The Order was severed and the 22 unobjected to paths were confirmed on 3rd August 2005 and added to the DMS.

Following the written representations procedure, the other path included in the Weston Order was confirmed on 21st January 2014 by the Secretary of State.

Definitive Map and Statement (DMS) - City of Bath

The first DMS for the City of Bath was published on 29th March 2006.  It includes 55 public rights of way within the City of Bath. 

The Definitive Map and Statement are held in Keynsham Civic Centre

A copy of the Definitive Map and Statement can be found at the Archives at the Guildhall, Bath 

The map and statement are available to view during office hours.  The intention is to make the map and statement available on-line on the Council’s internet site in the near future.
