Reducing air pollution and improving air quality in Bath & North East Somerset could lead to a transport mode shift for many local residents.  Bikeability Logo
To help support this shift, Bath & North East Somerset Council provides training to those who wish to swap their car for a cycle through Bikeability cycle training.
Bikeability is today’s cycle training programme; it’s like cycling proficiency, but better! It’s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today’s roads.
Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling and aims to support progress towards cycling to National Cycling Standard level.
Bikeability cycle training is taught by professional, qualified cycling instructors. During training, all manoeuvres are demonstrated first by the instructor prior to being replicated by the trainees.
By the end of our training, we hope to see riders independently performing systematic routines including:
  • Planning well in advance, anticipating and responding
  • The most suitable riding positions for different parts of journey
  • Looking behind before communicating intentions and changing riding position
  • Knowing when to give way to others or take priority assertively.
The majority of the work we do in Bath & North East Somerset is aimed at supporting children in school to be competent and confident on their bikes & to give them the skills to start making on-road journeys on their first road vehicle. Through this work we hope to promote sustainable travel, where possible, to and from school as well as for other short journeys.
In addition, all of our courses are adaptable for adults and we regularly run courses for adults. If you want to find out more, please email us at bikeability@bathnes.gov.uk giving details of what your ability is and what support you are seeking.
If you are booking onto one of our courses, please take the time to read the consent pack you will receive from us as well as our online information about preparing for training.

Level 1

This training is focussed on assessing and developing the basic cycle skills that a rider will need to become a competent and confident cyclist on roads. The training will always take place in an environment away from cars or traffic – usually in a playground or closed car park. Participants must be able to cycle to progress through this training.

Level 1 & 2 training

Cyclists start in a traffic-free environment covering Level 1 skills, and then progress out onto local roads where each instructor will work with up to 6 trainees. Level 2 training aims to get cyclists cycling at National Standard level or at least working towards this so they will be confident and competent at cycling on quiet roads.

Level 3

This course builds on skills developed in Levels 1 and 2 with the aim of introducing heavier traffic and more complex road situations such as queuing traffic, complex junctions and roundabouts. Participants should be aged 12 or above and have some experience of cycling to the National Standard on quiet roads.
