Housing Services provide support for older people over 60, and disabled people of any age, through our Home Improvement Agency – West of England Care & Repair

Handyperson Service

If you are an owner-occupier and need practical help with smaller repair and renovation jobs contact the Handyperson Service.  All the handypeople are experienced, multi-skilled tradespeople who are CRB checked.

You can ask for essential repairs, such as fixing a toilet that won’t flush or repairing a lock. Some of the work is free and for some there is a charge. Examples of some of the jobs that they can do include:

  • ·        Fitting handrails
  • ·        Unblocking gutters
  • ·        Fitting shelves
  • ·        Assembling flat-pack furniture
  • ·        Fitting curtain rails

Help with building work

As well as the Handyperson Service, West of England Care & Repair also undertakes larger repair and adaptation work for older and disabled people in their homes. They can visit you at home to discuss the work and give you advice on the options available. Examples of the sort of work they can do include:

  • ·        Re-roofing
  • ·        Central heating work
  • ·        Dealing with rising damp and penetrating damp
  • ·        Removing a bath to fit a level access shower
  • ·        Installing a stair lift
  • ·        Creating ramps and widening doors for wheelchair users.

Their experienced caseworkers can explain the process of applying for government grants to pay for the work or, if you are on a low income, find other organisations to help pay for the work. They can also organise and oversee the work for you.
