The Public Protection and Health Improvement Service plays a vital role in encouraging economic prosperity and community wellbeing by the provision of advice, education and enforcement of appropriate legislation.

Our teams have the following responsibilities in achieving this goal:                     

 

Environmental Protection and Licensing

 

 

Dealing with statutory nuisances (bonfires, noise, odour, light, rubbish accumulations) gypsies and travellers, and environmental pollution, including drainage and contaminated land sites.Providing advice on planning and licensing consultations.

 

Testing and monitoring of air quality, private and public water supplies, investigation of pollution incidents.

 

 

Promoting responsible dog ownership and compliance with the law whilst also protecting members of the public from the effects of irresponsible dog ownership.

Licencing and enforcement of alcohol sales, taxis, street trading, gambling establishments, skin piercing and tattoo studios, fireworks, etc.

 

Providing advice and treatments for a range of pests including rodents, wasps and bedbugs to domestic and commercial premises.

 

PPHI oversee and chair the River Safety Group which is a multi-agency group made up of representatives from Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Avon Fire and Rescue, Bath & North East Somerset Council, the Environment Agency and the Canal and Rivers Trust, supported by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).The group works together to bring about improvements in river safety throughout Bath & North East Somerset.

 

Education and Enforcement

 

Policing farm livestock, animal health and welfare and disease.

 

 

Inspecting high risk businesses to ensure safe standards of hygiene.  Providing advice to encourage and support healthy eating and to highlight safety in food preparation. Deliver Eat Out Eat Well.

Investigations and interventions following accidents or in high risk workplaces which include warehouses, factories and other workplaces to ensure safety at work.

Investigate food poisoning cases and outbreaks and other IDs.

 

Inspecting and testing for fair trading, product safety, rogue traders, consumer credit, age restricted sales, counterfeit goods, and prevention/investigation of consumer fraud. Focus on the vulnerable – Buy with Confidence and No Cold Calling Zones.

 

Active Lifestyles and Health Improvement

 

Improving health and well-being through a range of physical activity opportunities, in order to reduce health inequalities.

 

The Events Office offers an Advice and Support Service to assist event organisers in planning safe and successful outdoor events across Bath and North East Somerset. The Events Team also delivers Council supported major events.

 

Leisure

 

The procurement and delivery of the new Leisure Contract for the next 20 years.

 

The lead team supporting and co-ordinating the delivery of the Fit for Life physical activity strategy.
