If you are managing a food business and are looking for something specific, this page should help you find it (or direct you appropriately).

Registration Changes

If you have changed the name, ownership, location or type of food business you are operating, you must notify us of any changes to the registration details and you may have to complete a new food business registration form. If the business has changed ownership, the new owner will need to re-register the business using their own details. If you are planning to begin trading as a separate mobile premise, you will have to register that unit separately to your business; a Food Safety Officer may then wish to visit and view where you are storing your equipment.

Details on re-registration can be found on our Food Business Registration page.

Bite-size Food Safety Advice

If you have any detailed food safety questions or a number of food safety related questions, you can use our Bite-size Food Safety Advice service for businesses. For a charge of £48 (including VAT) an experienced officer will phone you so you can get advice directly from them for up to a 30 minute period. If you are interested in this service, please visit our paid services application page.

Food Hygiene Rating Re-scores

If your business has undergone a Food Hygiene Inspection by one of our officers and received a score less than a ‘5’, the officer will have left a list of works for you to complete or sent you a letter of required works. If you feel you have completed those works, you can request the officer return to carry out a re-scoring visit. This is a paid service. Ensure that all works previously outlined from the initial inspection have been addressed, to prevent having to request further re-scores.

Further details can be found at our Food Hygiene Rating Re-scores page.

Having trouble maintaining a good Food Hygiene Rating?

If you are struggling to keep a high Food Hygiene Rating, we can offer an arranged, advisory visit from a Food Safety Officer to give guidance on how you can achieve a better rating. The officer will view your business and any written systems you use as part of it, and will be able to determine what you would have to address to achieve a higher rating. These visits are carried out on a non-statutory basis, and are charged for; Terms and Conditions apply.

Further details can be found at our 'Gain & Retain 5' page.

Food Hygiene Training

New staff must have undertaken adequate food hygiene training (to a Level 2 CIEH standard) within 3 months of beginning work. Existing staff need to ensure that their training is up to date, so they are aware of any changes in food law. Our recommendation is that food hygiene training is refreshed every three to five years.

You can find a list of Level 2 Training providers operating in the local area here.

Allergen Information

Any changes or updates to the menu that are made also need to be made to the food allergy and intolerance information that you provide for customers. You can find more information at our allergens page.

Structural Changes

If you are carrying out structural improvements to the building you need to consider if you require planning approval before the works can be started.

You can find further information at our relevant page here.

If you are not sure what the structural requirements are relating to food safety and the law, please read the ‘Structure’ section in this leaflet.

If you are modifying your opening hours or are planning to provide late night refreshments, you will need to inform our licensing department. You will also need to inform them if you are planning to hold an event on council-owned land.
