Bus Shelter Design Options Consultation Results
As part of the Bath Transportation Package, Bath & North East Somerset Council will be upgrading nine key bus routes across the City of Bath to showcase standard. Improvements will include new & replacement bus shelters, raised kerbs and real time electronic displays at the busiest stops.
In January 2012, the Council carried out a public consultation on design options for these new bus shelters. The results of this consultation can be found below.
- Roof Type: Sloped Roof 53% / Pitched Roof 32% / Flat Roof 15%
- Colour: Green 64% / Blue 24% / Brown 11%
- Seating Type: Bench 81% / Perch 19%
The preferred option is therefore a green shelter with a sloped roof and bench seating.
On 14th March 2012, the Council’s Cabinet resolved unanimously:
-
To CONFIRM that the preferred shelter design options identified in the public consultation namely, green shelters, sloped roofs and bench style seats are to be procured for installation on the 9 bus routes which form a part of the Bath Transportation Project; and
-
To AGREE that consideration should be given to installing or re-installing a litter bin at each bus stop, in conjunction with neighbourhood services, to match the design of the bus shelter.
During the consultation the Council received a number of comments relating to the location of shelters. These comments will inform the next stage of the bus stop improvements programme and will be considered in due course.

About the Bath Transportation Package
The Bath Transportation Package (BTP) is a bus-based package of measures designed to improve public transport options and reduce the impact of, and reliance on, private car travel in the World Heritage Site of Bath.
Following the Comprehensive Spending Review of October 2010, the BTP was placed in the Government’s Development Pool of transport schemes to be considered for investment in future years. Following local elections in May 2011, the Council’s new administration amended the BTP, removing some controversial and expensive elements, improving deliverability of the scheme. Changes included removal of the BRT Route, A4 Eastern Park & Ride and bus lanes and a reduced Park and Ride expansion at Newbridge.
This amended scheme forms the Best and Final Bid for the BTP. This Bid was approved by Full Council on 14th July 2011, and has now been submitted to the Department for Transport (DfT). The BTP, and competing schemes from across the country, will be assessed by DfT against the relevant criteria and a final decision on which schemes will be funded is expected to be made in December 2011.
The BTP Best and Final Bid consists of the following elements:
- Expansion and improvement of Park & Ride facilities at Newbridge, Lansdown and Odd Down, with enhanced service frequencies;
- 9 showcase bus routes, with real time information and bus priority measures;
- An active traffic management/Information signing system;
- An improved City Centre environment;
- Improved public transport access for Bath Western Riverside (BWR).

Withdrawal of Compulsory Purchase Orders
As a result of changes to the Bath Transportation Package it is not now necessary to compulsorily purchase any third party land. The Council has therefore written to the Government Offices responsible requesting that all Compulsory Purchase Orders, Public Footpath Diversion Orders and the application for a certificate under s19 Acquisition of Land Act 1981 regarding the use of public open space are withdrawn.
The Government Offices responsible have acknowledged receipt of the Council’s request and confirmed that all Orders and applications relating to the Bath Transportation Package are being treated as withdrawn.
