The CIVITAS Renaissance initiative is taking place in five historic cities across Europe including Bath, with the support of Councils, local partners and the European Union. The initiative helps cities achieve more sustainable, clean and energy efficient urban transport systems by implementing and evaluating ambitious technology and policy based measures. CIVITAS Renaissance is part-funded by the EU.
The CIVITAS Renaissance measures taking place in the City of Bath are:
Alternative Fuels
A trial of a diesel-electric hybrid bus is currently taking place on Bath’s Park and Ride routes. The vehicle is able to operate on sections of its route on electric power only.
Collective Transport
Advanced Transport Systems Ltd have carried out a study to investigate the potential of Personal Rapid Transit within challenging historic urban environments such as Bath.
Freight Vehicle Demand Management
A study of freight movements in Bath has been completed, and a project will now be implemented to raise awareness of vehicle weight restrictions in the city.
Innovative Telematic Systems
Research has been carried out into a vehicle location/real time information system based upon the EU GALILEO satellite system.
Less Car Dependent, More Efficient Vehicles
The City Car Club has been expanded with six extra hybrid vehicles. Trails of innovative cycle hire systems will take place in the city, including both electric powered and conventional bikes.
Mobility Management, Marketing Information and Education
A new city information system will connect destinations, spaces and streets and improve legibility for people who work in and visit the city.
Safe and Secure Infrastructure
The traffic roundabout at St James Rampire has been replaced with a pedestrian open space. A variety of stone surface treatments and lighting is being trialled in this area with the aim of identifying best practice.
Urban Freight
A Freight Consolidation Centre demonstration has commenced. Freight deliveries are consolidated at an out of-city depot and transported to the city centre in a low-emission vehicle.
