Look out for Pay and Display parking
The next step of improving Bath & North East Somerset Council’s car park payment facilities at Avon Street and Charlotte Street to make parking even more convenient for motorists is complete. Pay and Display machines are now in place in these car parks on a temporary basis.
This interim measure will allow the Council to complete its procurement process for the possible introduction of new ANPR (Automated Number Plate Recognition) technology whilst not incurring significant costs to replace increasingly expensive and obsolete parts for Pay on Foot machinery.
Councillor Roger Symonds (Lib-Dem, Combe Down), Cabinet Member for Transport, said, “The Council’s intention is to move towards car parks without barriers to make parking as easy and convenient as possible with ANPR technology at Avon Street and Charlotte Street."
How ANPR works
The motorist would register their arrival and departure entering their registration plate and pay the appropriate tariff upon departure. Motorists would have their registration recorded by ANPR when they arrive and depart to prevent abuse of the system.
The end result is that fewer people will be queuing at the barriers and parking will be more convenient. The system is less likely to suffer vandalism and is more reliable than a barrier. As a result, the Council will have fewer breakdowns and lower maintenance costs.
- Charges apply 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday, including Bank Holidays.
- Avon Street, Charlotte Street, Manvers Street and Kingsmead Square have facilities to pay by credit card.
- * Please note, Avon Street Car Park lift is not suitable for wheelchairs or push chairs (lift may not be operational overnight.)
- ** A £1.50 charge applies to Avon Street and Charlotte Street car park if arriving after 18.00 and leaving before midnight.

Parking is free only in designated motorcycle parking bays in the car parks shown in the tables below.
Motorcycles not parked in these bays (i.e. parked in normal car parking bays) will be required to purchase a ticket the same as other motor vehicles.
