Cutting cars

The Council has been promoting city car clubs as a cheaper alternative to people owning their own car.

City Car Club allows people in Bath to drive a new car without any of the cost and hassle of owning it yourself. Members only pay for the actual journeys they make, saving a considerable amount of money.

Each City Car replaces 20 privately owned cars on average and members generally cut down on unnecessary car journeys by 35% after they join. This helps to reduce congestion and relieve the pressure on parking spaces in urban areas. Across the 300 strong fleet based all around cities around the UK, City Car Club saves 7,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year, the equivalent of 1,850 flights to Australia.

City Car Clubs currently run six cars in Bath. But working in partnership with the Council, it is introducing six more vehicles, powered by a more-environmentally-friendly fuel. A research project will determine the fuel that will be used.

City Car Clubs say that their vehicles in Bath are the most heavily utilised anywhere in Britain.

Benefits for the whole community

Cutting the number of cars on the roads in this way will help us achieve our aims of tackling congestion and improving air quality. With fewer cars on the road, public transport, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to move around more freely.
