Better Bus Routes

Better Public Transport
New bus stops will have raised kerbs and, in some cases, electronic information displays

Bath and North East Somerset Council is committed to improving public transport infrastructure throughout the area. Although the Council has no control over fares, it works with its local partners to provide better bus routes.

Quicker, Faster, More Reliable

As part of the Council’s £60 million investment in tackling congestion it intends to improve thirteen main bus routes throughout the area. These improvements include:

  • Raised pavements to ease access on and off buses;
  • Real time information at the busiest stops, providing details of approaching buses;
  • New bus shelters at sites where space allows;
  • Better timetable information.

One some routes there will be:

  • New bus lanes;
  • New and enhanced traffic signals to give bus services priority;
  • Restricted parking and loading regulations to help reduce congestion.

Will the buses I travel on benefit?

The improvements will be phased in over a period of five years. The Council will keep residents updated about which routes will be upgraded and when. The thirteen routes and services that will benefit are as follows:
  • 2 - Lansdown – City Centre – Ensleigh
  • 4 - Bathampton – City Centre – Whiteway
  • 5 - City Centre – Twerton
  • 6/7 - City Centre – Fairfield Park – Larkhall – City Centre
  • 10 - City Centre – Southdown
  • 13 - Bathford – City Centre – Fox Hill
  • 14 -  Weston – City Centre – Odd Down
  • 17 - Upper Weston – City Centre – Kingsway
  • 18 - City Centre – Bath University
  • 418 - Bath Spa University – City Centre – Bath University

There are also three additional routes that will benefit all services travelling on the road. These are as follows:

  • A4 – Serving communities in Keynsham, Saltford, and Bath. This route will also run to Bristol for commuters who work in our neighbouring city;
  • A367 – Serving communities in Midsomer Norton and Bath. This route will benefit the large numbers of out-commuters from Midsomer Norton who travel to work everyday;
  • A37 – Serving communities between Whitchurch and Farrington Gurney. This route will benefit the large numbers of out-commuters who travel to Bristol everyday.

Benefits for the whole community

The package of measures to improve the conventional bus network is designed to help make it more attractive for residents and visitors to travel in Bath and North East Somerset by public transport rather than private car.
