Public Consultation Events

The Kennet and Avon Canal Towpath between Bathampton and Sydney Gardens is one of the most heavily used sections on the canal and is popular with pedestrians, cyclists, anglers and boaters.  This heavy use has caused the existing stone and dust path to deteriorate and become less accessible to users, particularly during winter months.

The Canal and River Trust, who own and manage the towpath, strongly recommend that the path should be improved and have developed preliminary improvement proposals that would benefit all users.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has been allocated funding to improved this length of towpath and also to increase its accessibility and connectivity.  The Council are keen to utilise this funding on the following proposed improvements:

  • The provision of an appropriate "all year round" surface and widening of the towpath where possible to allow everyone easier access to the canal, as recommended by the Canal and River Trust.
  • Improved links from the Larkhall area to the north by upgrading the link from Grosvenor Bridge Road.

Your views on the most appropriate surface treatment are important.  Please read the Frequently Asked Questions document before completing our questionnaire.  The online version of the questionnaire can be found at

Closing date for comments is Friday 11th September.

The results of the consultation will be carefully considered by the Council prior to the final plans being agreed.
