Shopping bag

From the 5th of October 2015 the law requires all retailers in England, employing 250 or more employees, to charge five pence for single-use plastic carrier bags. The objective is to reduce the use and supply of plastic bags and the litter associated with them, by encouraging people to re-use bags or to use ‘bags for life’. Retailers are expected to donate the proceeds of the scheme to good causes of their choice.

Small and medium sized businesses are not yet covered by this law but they are being encouraged to charge on a voluntary basis.

Trading Standards are advising businesses to familirise themselves with the Retailers Responsibities guidance which can be found on the gov.uk website - Carrier bag charging

Information for consumers explaining the charge can be found here - Explaining the charge
