From 2014 to 2018 events and activities will be taking place across Bath and North East Somerset to mark the centenary of the First World War.

These pages are constantly updated to provide details of how local people are commemorating the anniversary.  We are keen to hear from organisations about events and projects.  Please email details to centenary_worldwar1@bathnes.gov.uk.

Unveiling of Poppy Cascade, time TBC

Poppy Cascade unveiling

The people of Keynsham have been busy knitting poppies to create a cascade on the tower of St John's Church as the centrepiece of the town's Armistice and Remembrance commemorations.  During the week there will also be a parade through the town with local children (Friday 9 November), a World War One Songs singing event (Friday 9 November) and a trail of 51 poppies in Keynsham Memorial Park representing the 51 men from Keynsham who died in the conflict.

The dedication of a 'Tommy' figure for Bath, which has been installed by the Bath and North East Somerset Council Parks Team and purchased with funds raised by the Rotary Club of Bath.  Funds from the Tommies support forces charities as part of a national commemoration of the First World War centenary.

Bell Ringing and Remembrance Ceremony, 12.30 (ringing) and 3.00pm for service

Bell Ringing, Remembrance Service and exhibition

The bells will be rung for an hour to remember the 1,400 ringers lost in the First World War.  The Remembrance service will take place at the Cenotaph, Bowden Hill, at 3pm to honour men from Chilcopmton and Downside who never returned.  Afterwards an exhibition will be open in Chilcompton Village Hall, a local choir will sing and refreshments will be available.

As part of a nationwide act of commemoration a beacon will be lit in the paddock by the village hall to mark the centenary of the Armistice.  Rev. Preb. Jan Knott will lead a ceremony at 18.30 with the lighting of he beascon at 19.00. Afterwards there will be a bring and share supper for parisioners of Marksbury, Stanton Prior and Hunstrete, with tickets bookable in advance (first come, first served).
