From 2014 to 2018 events and activities will be taking place across Bath and North East Somerset to mark the centenary of the First World War.

These pages are constantly updated to provide details of how local people are commemorating the anniversary.  We are keen to hear from organisations about events and projects.  Please email details to centenary_worldwar1@bathnes.gov.uk.

Eternal Light

Lucis Choir with Southern Sinfonia, Noctis and Bath Abbey Melody Makers present a choral programme to commemorate the last year of the First World War centenary including Howard Goodall's Eternal Light: A Requiem and music by Elgar, Parry and Karl Jenkins.

12 June 2018 Bath Abbey Schools' Singing Programme at Bath Abbey

Concert, 18.30

When the War Came

A massed choir of 300 primary school pupils from Bath will perform a new oratorio by Jools Scott with lyrics by Sue Curtis.  Bristol Ensemble will accompany the children and Jon Monie is narrator.  The story focuses on six young people from a small village whose lives are changed foreveer when the War comes.

18 June 2018 Bath & North East Somerset Council at the Guildhall, Bath 

Flag ceremony, around 10am

Armed Forces Day flag-raising ceremony

Each year the Council marks Armed Forces Day by raising a flag outside the Guildhall in Bath.  The short service will include the playing of the Last Post.

Gallipoli by Peter Weir

A screening of Peter Weir's 1981 film about two Australians who joined the Allied attempt to defeat Turkish forces in 1915.  The film will be introduced by Museum Director, Stuart Burroughs.

Sing-along for the WW1 centenary

The church is hosting a music event to evoke the emotions of 100 years ago, from recruitment songs through to the joy of the Armistice.  Also on display is an exhibition marking the role of Paulton people in the Great War.
