World War I Centenary events and projects

From 2014 to 2018 events and activities will be taking place across Bath and North East Somerset to mark the centenary of the First World War.

These pages will be constantly updated to provide details of how local people are commemorating the anniversary.  We are keen to hear from organisations about events and projects.  Please email details to centenary_worldwar1@bathnes.gov.uk.

Bath Spa Band and Priordonnas Choir at St Michael's Without Church, Bath

Concert, 6.30-7.30pm

Not Forgotten: An Act of Remembrance to commemorate the Battle of Passchendaele

Music and readings in memory of those lost in the Battle and particularly Lance Corporal Humphrey Arthur Hayes and Captain Benjamin Chipchase Clayton, both missing in action on 17 August 1917.

Special event, 11am-4pm

World War One Discovery Day

Join us for a free event at the Guildhall where you can find out more about the First World War and its impact locally, and how we remember the War today. Displays, expert advice about memorabilia, craft activities, music, dressing-up and a free guided walk (11.30am, first come first served).

Remembrance commemoration, 1.30 for 2pm

Field of Remembrance

A short ceremony in which this year's field of Remembrance at Abbey Churchyard will be officially established.  A bugler and the band of the Salvation Army will play.

Voices 1917: Returning we Hear the Larks

An evening of readings of poetry, letters and prose with music from 1917.

Durufle's haunting Requiem and sacred music from the Renaissance will be performed by local choir, Noctis, by candlelight.

Remembrance ceremony and wreath-laying at Bath's War Memorial

Royal British Legion in Bath City Centre

Remembrance parade, from 2pm

The annual Remembrance parade will leave from the bottom of Milsom Street at 2pm.  Major-General Ivan Hoover will take the salute outside the Guildhall.  A service at Bath Abbey will follow at 3pm.

Remembrance services, parades and ceremonies take place across the district including at Keynsham War Memorial and Radstock War Memorial in the morning and in Midsomer Norton in the afternoon.
