Urban Traffic Management Control

Urban Traffic Management and Control (UTMC) is a way of monitoring, operating and controlling traffic lights through a central computer. The computer uses information gathered from sensors in the road to decide whether traffic is getting heavy or congested on a particular road. The computer then makes decisions and can change the timing of traffic lights to let the traffic move more freely, so reducing hold-ups.

UTMC reduces congestion by improving the flow of traffic, in turn this helps:

  • Improve air quality by reducing the pollution from slow moving traffic.
  • Produce long term, lasting solutions for improving traffic flow and public transport schemes.
  • Protect Bath as a World Heritage Site.
  • Reduce delays to public transport.
  • Reduce risks and delays to pedestrians.
  • Manage the speed and amount of traffic in a particular area.
  • Improve journey times by cutting the number of delays.
  • Improve journey times for emergency vehicles
