Sports Leaders in Action

Local unemployed people are set to benefit from a new scheme being piloted by the Sport and Active Lifestyles team.

Get Active into Work is a partnership between the Council and Bath Rugby. It uses the principles of sports leadership to help boost the confidence and skills of candidates, with the aim of getting them into work, education or training.

The course is being tutored by coaches from Bath Rugby. It involves two days a week of training and mentoring for 8 weeks, followed by a work placement with either the Council or partner organisation.

All of them are also working with the Neighbourhood Services and Communications teams to help design and implement a social networking project to promote local parks.

The current pilot is underway with plans for a new cours in Feb 2013

The programme will include a Level 2 in Community Sport Leadership award as well as money management, project planning and a first aid course.  Suitable candidates will be supported to go on to take their Level 2 coaching qualifications.

“Ultimately the course is about three main things – progression into jobs, education and training; qualifications, and improved health and wellbeing. We want to help these people and increase their opportunities for development, giving them confidence in themselves.”
