We’re making it much simpler for small, independent producers to supply food to local schools.

The new contract went 'live' in August 2016 but local food suppliers still have the option to join in this contract.

The Council runs a very successful catering service supplying meals to over 60 local primary schools and nurseries. In the past, a traditional procurement approach was taken, with one supplier appointed for each food category.

Following discussions with local food suppliers, we are putting in place a new Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS). This allows for more than one supplier per type of product, and allows organisations to join in the contract after the initial contract set-up.  If you are interested in taking part in this opportunity you can access the contract details through the link below.

The initial contract was awarded in early August with the first deliveries to schools being made in early September, we will keep these web pages upto date with further information during the life of the contract.

The key benefits of the new approach will be:

  • Greater opportunities for local producers and suppliers to supply schools; resulting in a wider choice of suppliers
  • Consolidation of orders and one delivery drop; meaning a reduction in carbon emissions.
  • Local, healthy food for local primary school children (with the potential to roll out to academies too)
  • Increased options for seasonal produce on the menu

The Council is working with Bristol-based, independent, online food store Fresh-Range to pilot the new system, with Fresh-Range being responsible for all orders and deliveries.  They have new premises on the outskirts of Keynsham; ideally placed to receive produce and service the schools' orders.
