Bath & North East Somerset Council has a legal duty, under section 436A of the Education Act 1996, to identify, as far as it is possible to do so, children missing education (CME) and get them back into education. All children, regardless of their circumstances, are entitled to a good education and some may need additional support to access education. The duty relates to children of compulsory school age who are not on a school admission register and not receiving a suitable education.
In order to meet our duty in relation to these children we ask that you notify the Children Missing Education Service of any pupil you are unable to place in your school having received an in-year application or contact from a family looking for a school place. Families moving between local authority areas can sometimes lead to a child becoming ‘lost’ in the system and consequently missing education; it is therefore very important that we are made aware of these children.
Please can you build notification to the Children Missing Education Service of children without a school place into your school admission procedures.
We will regularly raise this awareness with you.
Please send all notifications of children without a school place to:Children Missing Education Service Bath and North East Somerset Council Lewis House Manvers Street Bath
