Changing Schools/In Year Admissions

In-Year Applications for academic year 2017/18

We recognise children change schools for a variety of reasons most often the request is made as a result of a house move or changes in family circumstances.  Occasionally parents will request a transfer between local schools for other personal reasons.

Children will often experience disruption to their education when they move schools. If requesting a move between local schools as a result of perceived difficulties at the current school this will not always resolve issues that led to the application.  It is of particular importance for children once courses for public examinations have begun as subjects may not be available and course work may not be accepted under a different examination board.  We strongly advise parents/carers to consider the potential disruption to their child’s schooling that a change of school may entail and recommend that prior to making a change of school application they discuss any issues with the child’s current school as often a resolution can be found.

Please note that the application process can take up to 20 school days before you know if a place can be offered at your 1st preference school but can take longer when large volumes of applications are received prior to the start of a new term.  Any applications received just prior to or during school holiday periods will not normally be able to be considered until the new term starts.

Requests for school places are normally only considered approximately 4 weeks prior to a requested start date. However, for places being sought for a September admission to an existing year group in a school, applications can be made in mid June.

Applying for a Secondary School in 2017/18

Application forms for a Bath & North Somerset secondary school are obtainable from any Bath & North Somerset secondary school or can be downloaded using this link.  In Year Admissions Application for Secondary School.

Applications must be made directly to the secondary school, no matter where you live. Parents/carers are able to make 3 preferences on the form and it should be returned to the first preference school.

If it is not possible to offer your child a place at your first preference school, a copy of the form will be passed to the school named as a second preference.

Academy, Foundation and Voluntary Aided Schools may require completion of a supplementary form.

Proof of your address may be required.

The school will notify parent/carers of the outcome of the application. If a school is unable to offer your child a place they will advise you in writing:

·         of the reason they cannot offer a place

·         of the appeal process

·         of any opportunity to remain on a waiting list for a place, and

·         forward your form to the lower preference school for consideration.
