Smokefree Sports Clubs

What is the Bath & North East Somerset Smoke Free Sports Club Grant programme?

This is a public health grant programme which is provided by the Bath & North East Somerset Council's, Public Health team and managed by Quartet Community Foundation. The policy is designed to improve the health of our children and young people by preventing adults from smoking in and around young people’s sports venues and will enable local sports clubs in Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES), coaching young people aged 6-17, to implement an outdoor Smoke Free policy so that smoking is not seen as an acceptable behaviour. Therefore the policy will play a role in delaying early uptake of smoking in young people and will contribute to improving health by reducing smoking rates in the young.

Most people start smoking in their teens and young people who grow up in a smoke free environment are much more likely to be smoke free as an adult.  Whilst smoking levels have dropped to 13.6% of the adult population in Bath & North East Somerset, smoking levels are higher in some communities. A smoke free environment will help young people to not associate sport with smoking. Local Sports clubs are the ideal place to promote a smoke free environment because they offer activities that contribute to the improvement of health and well being of young people in our communities.

Data from the World Health Organisation has shown that smoking hurts young people’s physical fitness in terms of both performance and endurance even among young people trained in competitive running because regular smoking reduces the rate of lung growth in young people. Long-term health consequences of youth smoking are reinforced by the fact that most young people who smoke regularly before the age of 16 continue to smoke throughout adulthood. Therefore, prevention of uptake is a vital part of reducing the numbers of people smoking and improving the health and wellbeing of our communities.

The programme requires clubs to become smoke free whilst children & young people are present and includes a £500 grant that can be spent on general club activities. Successful Applicants must attend a short training course to be held on Thursday 11th January 2018 in the evening.  Smokefree signage will be provided.
