Bath's great innovators and entrepreneurs 

  • William Herschel created his own telescope in Bath and discovered the planet Uranus from his Bath back garden in 1781
  • Plasticine was invented in Bath by William Harbutt.
  • Picochip is a venture-backed small cell maker based in Bath, England, founded in 2000. In January 2012 Picochip was acquired by Mindspeed Technologies for around $52million.
  • Imaginarium West (based in Bath) will be a new project for Imaginarium Studios, renowned for 'Performance Capture'  -  the technical process used to translate an actor’s performance into a digital character, seen in films such as The Lord of The Rings, Avatar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Adventures of TinTin and many more.  As well as producing CG animation, The Imaginarium West will develop proprietary computer-generated tools to license out to other visual effects companies and studios.
  • Operating internationally, Bath is home to a cluster of leading software consultancies - Praxis High Integrity Systems providing software solutions for defence, aerospace and nuclear solutions; IPL whose clients include Orange; and AMDOCS, a truly international company operating in Asia, America and Europe
  • Located in the centre of Bath, the University of Bath's Innovation Centre has supported 65 companies, generated £250m venture capital and is home to Silicon SouthWest, the largest concentration of silicon designers outside of California
  • Shift Active Media, creates high quality cycling bespoke video content for broadcast and online channels from its Bath offices. The company is an international business employing 46 people and has made over 1,400 cycling films over the last two years. It is now a Google partner, enjoying an investment of over £1million from the internet giants.
