Newly paved Stall Street
The Council is committed to creating a safer and more attractive city centre area, reducing the dominance of motor vehicles in the historic core while enhancing the street environment. In 2012, our first public realm improvement scheme was delivered on the High Street and Northumberland Place. This significantly improved footfall and the pedestrian experience in this area.
Drawing on the same guiding principles, during 2015 we implemented new traffic restrictions during core shopping hours (10am to 6pm) on Lower Borough Walls & Stall Street. This busy thoroughfare carries around 25,000 pedestrians per day, and by cutting vehicle traffic we are making it a far more pleasant space for local people and visitors to shop and socialise.
We have improved the quality of the street with a new level surface throughout, paved with natural stone materials in keeping with the setting of the Roman Baths. New street furniture such as public benches have also been added in key places.
The result is an area in which people will be happier to spend time and enhance the City Centre’s reputation as a safe and accessible destination.
