Launch of the Getting Around Bath - Transport Strategy

Following a Cabinet meeting held on May 14 2014, Bath & North East Somerset Council launched a new transport strategy for Bath.

The long-term vision is that:

Bath will enhance its unique status by adopting measures that promote sustainable transport and reduce the intrusion of vehicles, particularly in the historic core.

This will enable more economic activity and growth while enhancing the city’s special character and environment and improving the quality of life for local people.

Bath is an important World Heritage City – we must look after the environment of the city whilst ensuring it’s a great place to live and work.

The aim is to reduce congestion and allow people to move around to make the long-term economic strategy for the area work. We want to:

  • Support and enable economic growth, competitiveness and jobs
  • Promote sustainable mobility
  • Widen travel choice
  • Widen access to opportunities: jobs / learning / training
  • Improve air quality & health, reducing vehicle carbon emissions
  • Safeguard and enhancing the unique historic environment and World Heritage Site status
  • Improve the quality of life in the city

Key proposals include:

  • developing a walking/cycling strategy to make Bath the UK’s most walkable city;
  • better management of HGVs in the city;
  • continued expansion of Park and Ride sites and;
  • a new location for coaches to park after dropping off visitors in the centre.

The Transport Strategy was officially launched at the Bath City Conference event held at the Guildhall on April 30. Information provided at the launch can be accessed via the links below alongside a list of frequently asked questions.

Frequently asked Questions

Feedback

Following the launch of the strategy at the Bath City Conference, the Council's Cabinet decided to undertake a consultation on the content of the strategy via an online questionnaire, two public events and a stakeholder meeting.

The consultation allowed people to get involved and give us their views – not just those people who live in the city, but those that work here and travel to Bath regularly. Following the consultation a Findings Report was produced that reviews the feedback that was received.

Public Events

The public events gave the opportunity to find out more and ask questions and took place as follows:

Monday June 30, Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute 6pm to 9pm.

Friday July 11, Guildhall 2pm to 5pm.

For those who couldn't attend but wished to make their views known, an online questionnaire was made available, as were the Exhibition Boards that were displayed at the public events.

The closing date for views on the high level strategy was July 25.

Getting Around Bath - Transport Strategy Workshop

As well as the public exhibitions a Workshop took place on June 26, during which stakeholders were given a presentation on the Bath Transport Strategy and were able to provide their feedback.
