Archives and Local Studies Service

The Archives and Local Studies Service is based at Bath Record Office in the Guildhall. We collect and keep safe historical records relating to Bath, and make them available for research to all who wish to use them.

In our strongrooms there are over three kilometres of shelving, filled with records dating from 1189, the time of Richard the Lionheart, to the present day. Some items are kept in store offsite; these can be requested with a minimum of 2 working days warning.

Our collection incorporates the majority of the Local Studies reference stock and special collections previously available in Bath Central Library.

All who wish to use this wonderful resource are welcome, and staff are happy to give you help and advice with your research.

Local and Family History in Libraries

All Bath and North East Somerset Library branches hold collections of Local Studies books that are available to browse and borrow. You can also use our library computers to research local and family history online. Our resources include a subscription to Ancestry UK, that can be accessed on library computers or from your own device on library premises.

Local Images and Photographs

Thousands of historic local images and photographs are available to view on the Bath in Time website and online gallery. Many of the images on the site can be ordered as high quality print reproductions.
