Can I join the library?

Any UK resident may join the library and it is free. If you are in Bath & North East Somerset on holiday you can also join and have full access to our services during your stay.

How much does it cost to join the library?

It is free to become a member of our libraries, to borrow books and maps. We do charge for some services and for items that are returned late. Please see 'Library Charges and Loan periods' for more information.

How do I get a library card?

You can get a membership card at your local library or online using the LibrariesWest website. If you are under 16 you will require your parent or guardian to be present.

When will I get the card?

If you visit the library we will issue the card immediately. If you join online then when you come to the library with your temporary number we can then give you a card.

Where is my local library?

You can find your nearest library using the the 'My Area' section of the website. You simply need to enter your postcode and select libraries from the choose service option. You can also find the nearest mobile stops.

How many items can I borrow?

You can borrow up to 20 items at any one time with a maximum of 8 audio visual items.

Can I renew my items?

Yes. You can renew your books up to 10 times, unless someone else has requested them and then you will be given 3 days from the day you are renewing the item to return them. If you renew your CDs or DVDs you will be charged a further hire charge, which you can pay when you return the item.

What is LibrariesWest?

LibrariesWest is a partnership of seven public library services in the south west of England. The services work together to share costs and offer enhanced services to customers. Dorset and Poole have joined existing members Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset and South Gloucestershire, resulting in a 'coast to coast' service. Your library card entitles you to borrow from, and return items to, any library in these areas.

What is my PIN?

When you join the library we will give you a personal identification number (PIN). If you do not have a PIN or have forgotten your PIN please contact us

Can I be reminded when my items are due to be returned?

Yes - just add your email address or mobile number to your LibrariesWest account or visit your local library to update your details. You will then receive reminders and alerts.

Can I be alerted when my reserved items are ready to be collected?

Yes - just add your email address or mobile number to your LibrariesWest account or visit your local library to update your details. You will then receive reminders and alerts.

What if I have lost my library card?

If you have lost your library card please contact us immediately. We will replace your first card free of charge. Any subsequent replacements in the same year will be charged for.

What if I have moved house?

Please let us know if you have moved house. You can update your details on the LibrariesWest website or contact us and we will update your record.

Can I plug my laptop and mobile phone into a socket?

You can do this in Bath Central Library and Keynsham Library on the dedicated plug sockets in the quiet study area. You are unable to plug anything in, in other libraries. 

Can I pay by debit or credit card?

Yes - at all libraries except Saltford, Paulton and the Mobile.

Who do I contact for a reference library enquiry?

Our Enquiry Centre can help with business information, study and quiz queries.

Do you have old newspapers?

Local newspapers on microfilm and some national newspapers including the Times digital archive which goes back to 1785 are available at the Archives and Local Studies Service at the Guildhall. See 'Local Studies' for more information.

Do you have WiFi?

Yes. The majority of our libraries (excluding the mobile library & Moorland Road) have free WiFi. Connect to the network Banes-Public and follow the online instructions.

Where can I find out about volunteering for the library service?

Without the help of volunteers, the Home Library Service would not exist. If you're interested in becoming a volunteer, please visit the Library Volunteers page for more information.

Are there books available to support people with common mental health conditions and dementia?

Yes, each library in Bath and North East Somerset has a core list of titles covering issues such as dementia, anxiety, depression, phobias, panic attacks, bulimia and sleep problems.
