Who can use the Home Library Service?

The Home Library Service is an important means of enhancing the quality of life for people of any age who are unable to visit libraries. The support can be short term or long term depending on need. Residents of sheltered housing, adult residential homes and nursing homes are also eligible for our home library services.

This includes people:

  • Who have restricted mobility
  • Who are housebound
  • Who cannot go out alone without help

People experiencing these difficulties may:

  • Have a long-term limiting illness
  • Have a number of disabilities
  • Have a sensory impairment
  • Have profound or severe learning difficulties
  • Experience poor mental health
  • Be in need of short-term help (e.g. following an operation or accident)
  • Experience cultural isolation
  • Be carers unable to leave the home for any length of time

We want people to retain their independence for as long as possible, preferably in their own homes. We aim to give access to library services, (and friendships made with volunteers), that enrich lives. We know that reading and browsing have very positive effects on health and wellbeing.

The service is provided by volunteers and can be restricted  by the number of volunteers we have at any time. If there are family or friends who are able to assist with library book ordering or collection, then this will enable us to help other readers who do not have this support.

Is the service free?

Yes. Books and most other items may be borrowed for up to 6 weeks. Videos and DVDs can be hired by the housebound readers’ volunteer. Music CDs, videos & DVDs are issued for up to two weeks, instead of one week, but at the same hire charge as for 1 week.

Overdue charges will be incurred for the late return of videos or DVDs.

Is the service permanent?

The service may be provided on a temporary basis, for someone recovering from an illness, for example, or it can be on a long term basis where the circumstances are unlikely to change.

What items can be borrowed?

Up to 20 items may be borrowed at a time by each reader. The types of material available to readers include large print books, talking books, music CDs, videos, DVDs, paperbacks, ordinary print fiction and non-fiction.
