Apply for chimney height approval

If you are building a new chimney or expanding an existing furnace, you will need to apply for chimney height approval. Use this page to apply.

Why you need to get approval

Under the Clean Air Act 1993, you need to get chimney height approval to ensure that smoke particles will not cause pollution that affects health or causes a nuisance.

Without approval, it is an offence to use a furnace to do any of the following:

  • burn pulverised fuel
  • burn any solid matter at a rate of 45.4 kg or more an hour
  • any liquid or gaseous matter at a rate equivalent to 366.4 kW or more
Warning You can be fined if you do any of the above without chimney height approval

Your application will need to include enough information for us to make the necessary calculations.
