With more vehicles on our roads, tackling Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) pollution is a big challenge.

It’s a challenge we take seriously, and since 2002 we’ve been monitoring pollution levels at the roadside, and regularly listening to and acting on resident’s concerns and ideas.

But it’s clear that more needs to be done – and urgently.

Bath Breathes 2021

In 2017, the Government issued the Council with a directive to reduce the high levels of NO2 pollution currently being recorded on the London Road in Bath.

This followed the publication of the Government’s National Air Quality Plan (NAQP), which aims to fast track air-quality improvements across the country by 2021.

As one of 29 local authorities identified as needing extra help to achieve the Government’s targets, we’ll benefit from significant government funding and expertise – resources not normally available to us - to investigate and implement some of the suggestions to improve air quality in the city, recently put forward during a consultation with the public.

What’s involved?

The Government has set a clear framework and timeline for meeting NO2 targets in Bath.

By December 2018, we must have:

  • Gathered the necessary vehicle emission data and evidence on which to base decisions
  • Considered a wide range of measures capable of reducing vehicle emissions and encouraging greener modes of travel
  • Fully assessed the impacts of the most viable options on air quality, residents and the economy
  • Presented and agreed a package of measures that will bring about improvements to air quality quickly, and by 2021 at the latest.

We’ll be talking to residents and stakeholders throughout the year, and there will be two formal periods of engagement on the shortlisted and preferred packages of measures.

Tackling pollution across the whole region is important to us, and our work on this initiative for Bath will progress alongside air quality improvements already planned and published in Air Quality Action Plans (AQAPs) for Bath, Keynsham and Saltford (such as the improvements planned for communities along the A37).
