From 1st April 2017, new Council Tax Support Scheme rules apply to people who are on Universal Credit.

The information held on their Universal Credit claim will be used to determine the amount of Council Tax Support they’re entitled to.

From 1st April 2017, the new rules apply to:

  • existing working age Council Tax Support claimants who are already on Universal Credit, and
  • new working age claimants who claim and are entitled to Universal Credit.
If you were already claiming Council Tax Support:

If you were already claiming Council Tax Support and are on Universal Credit, you will have been automatically transferred on to the new scheme from 1st April 2017. We contacted you in late February / early March 2017 to explain how the changes were likely to affect you.

If you have recently made a new claim for Council Tax Support:

If you made a new claim for Council Tax Support in early 2017, the amount of help you're entitled to may change from April 2017. If you were already on Universal Credit, or started claiming it before the end of March, you will have been automatically transferred on to the new Council Tax Support scheme from 1st April 2017.
