Frequently Asked Questions

General

Can sections be back-dated to start before the date of enrolment?

Only one section may be back-dated by up to 3 months. The activity must have been done in accordance with DofE programme principles, conditions and age requirements.

What do the leader titles mean?

Follow this link for a description of the leader roles.

Can a participant use something they are already doing?

As long as the participant works to improve their ability and personal development, it is perfectly acceptable to use something they already do. However it may be of benefit to the participant to try new things as well.

With the aim being to broaden horizons and try new experiences it is important to guide participants so that one area of interest isn’t focused on across all the sections.

My current activity has finished can I use something else to finish the time or do I have to start again?

A change of activity should not be encouraged as participants will not gain the full benefit of developing their skills and knowledge of their activities.

However, it is possible to change the activity once in each section.

The two activities when added together are required to add up to the minimum overall time requirement for that section/level. Both activities must be recorded.

Sections

Each Section listed below comes with the link to the DofE website page. By using the links you will be able to access ideas and programme guides for specific activities. It is good practice to check which category an activity falls under before the participant begins.

Assessors for each activity must have knowledge and experience in the given subject.

Skill

I enjoy reading, can my Mother/Father Assess my reading progress for my Skill section?

- No. To maintain the integrity and value of DofE Awards Assessors must be independent, a family member may be more strict or lenient in their assessment.

- Part of the experience is gaining the confidence to approach and communicate with others to set up an individual programme tailored to personal abilities and development.

- Parental involvement can assist with development of an activity but there should be regular contact with an independent body.

- For example - for reading this could be an English teacher or someone at the local library.

Physical

Can I use cycling to school?

You can use cycling but it should be as part of a club so that you can demonstrate improvement and progression to your personal targets.

Expedition

http://www.dofe.org/expedition

Can anyone assess an Expedition group?

Expedition Assessors must be Accredited, through the DofE process in place.  They will have a unique Accreditation Number and their details will be held on the national database of assessors.

Accredited Assessors are approved to assess at Bronze/Silver &/or Gold level.

How many leaders do I need to take out with me?

A group must have sufficient adult/child ratios. Below is a table which gives a guide to staffing.  These ratios are based on a group that does not pose any additional risk due to health or welfare requirements of the participants.
