As the Independent Chair of the Bath & North East Somerset Local Safeguarding Adults Board (LSAB), I am delighted to know that people are taking an interest in what we do. Safeguarding adults who have care and support needs is a challenge shared between a number of public organisations.  The purpose of the LSAB is to coordinate and monitor the effectiveness of arrangements to safeguard relevant adults in their area. Safeguarding means not only the processes for responding to reports of suspected abuse but also activities that contribute towards preventing it from happening in the first place.

In carrying out these functions the LSAB will take an interest in a range of activities including patient safety, the quality of local support services, local provision both public and privately run, mental health services and the activities of commissioners. Members of the LSAB include: the Local Authority; NHS England; the Clinical Commissioning Group; local NHS Trusts and NHS Foundation Trusts; local housing and social care providers; and the Police.

The business of the LSAB is delivered by our sub groups who are responsible for things like coordinating training, communications, policy and procedures, an audit programme of casework and support to reviews of cases in which serious harm occurs. The work of our sub – groups is in turn, overseen and directed through four Safeguarding Adults Board meetings per year, attended by senior managers representing our member agencies. It is really important that we have an independent voice at these meetings that provides a perspective from the community we serve and a friendly challenge. For that reason we are seeking to recruit “Lay” Members to join the Board. This role is unpaid but out of pocket expenses are reimbursed. You don’t have to be an expert in anything!

If you think you might be interested in taking part in the work of the Safeguarding Adults Board, please get in touch with our Business Support Manager Dami Howard on 01225 396350 for an informal chat. Here's the Lay Member information pack where you can find out more and apply.
