If you produce or deal with waste which has certain hazardous properties, you must ensure your business complies with the hazardous waste regulations. Most businesses generate some level of hazardous items, such as the following:

  • Computer monitors
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Chemical wastes
  • Solvents
  • Lead-acid batteries
  • Electrical equipment
  • Asbestos
  • Pesticides
  • Batteries

If your business produces any hazardous waste, you must keep it separate from your general waste and recycling. It is also important to use a specialist contractor licensed to collect and safely dispose of hazardous waste.

As a business, it is your responsibility to complete a Hazardous waste consignment note (HWN) to pass on to the contractor appointed to collect before you allow a contractor to remove hazardous wastes from your premises.

The hazardous waste regulations are complex. To ensure your business is fulfilling its obligations in line with the regulations, please contact the Environment Agency for further information and advice. See also our Business Waste & Recycling Guide August 2016 booklet.

Please note we are not licenced to collect or receive hazardous waste from businesses at our Transfer Station for disposal. We can only accept fridges, freezers and TVs from your business at the Transfer Station if you can prove they have been collected from a private domestic household.

Batteries recycling

The European Batteries Directive became UK law in 2010. It places stricter controls on the manufacturing process and ensures a greater level of battery recycling the UK.

These regulations require retailers who supply portable batteries to help consumers to recycle batteries, whilst distributors supplying more than 32kg of portable batteries per year, are obligated to provide a free take-back recycling system.
