Royal Crescent driving ban approved
Drivers must bid a poignant farewell to their four-wheeled love affair with Baths Royal Crescent on Valentines Day this year - before the historic road is finally closed to traffic.
On Monday, February 15th, Bath & North East Somerset Council will put up temporary barriers to close the Marlborough Road end of the Crescent to all but residents vehicles. The barriers will be permanently replaced once final designs are approved.
Last autumn, Councillors approved a Prohibition of Driving Order, effectively closing the crescent to all vehicles. The order to close off the historic landmark enjoys the backing of a public inquiry, which supported the Councils intentions.
The Crescent has long been the centre of debate about whether it should be open to traffic, including commuter and tourists cars and vehicles, coaches and tour buses. In his report, the inquiry inspector concluded that the Order should go ahead, but in the interest of preserving the historic buildings, rather than to ban particular groups of vehicles.
The Councils intention is that the Order will prevent further damage to the road structure and will enhance the environment of what is considered to be a unique built structure.
