Welcome to the Preventative Services Commissioning Team page.

The team commissions the following service areas:

Alternative Education Provision

This provision ensures the continued education of children and young people who, because of exclusion or other reasons would not otherwise receive a suitable full time education. Alternative Education provision also supports pupils to address emotional and behavioural difficulties, with the aim to re-integrate children into mainstream education wherever possible.

Maternity

Maternity services in B&NES are commissioned from the RUH jointly with Wiltshire and North East Somerset.

Family Support and Play Service

This service is commissioned from Southside Family Project in partnership with Bath Area Play Project. The service provides targeted support and early help to vulnerable families with children and young people aged 5-19. There is a strong focus on strengthening the attachment between children and young people and their parents/ carers, strengthening resilience and brining about positive change within the family to prevent needs escalating and families subsequently requiring statutory services.

Early Years Specialist Education

This is commissioned from Bath Opportunity Pre-school, a specialist setting providing Early Years Education and therapeutic services to children with additional needs from Bath and North East Somerset.

Nurture Outreach

This is commissioned from Brighter Futures who provide schools, colleges, nurseries, voluntary and parent groups with specialist services to improve learning and well-being outcomes for children and young people. This can include helping with assessment, advice, action planning, supervision and modelling strategies. Brighter Futures also deliver THRIVE training sessions.

Children's Centres including Theraplay

Children's Centres are commissioned from Action for Children in West Bath and from Bright Start Children's Centres in East Bath, Keynsham and Chew Valley and Somer Valley. Children's Centres provide support to families with children aged 0-5 to help with parenting and ensuring children are developing well and be ready to start school. There are a range of ways that families can be supported, for example Theraplay, which is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment based on the natural patterns of parent and child healthy interaction and is personal, physical and fun.

Hospital Education Reintegration Service (HERS)

This service offers teaching and support/advice to children and young people who cannot attend school because of health medical needs.

Mentoring Plus

This service works with young people aged 12-21 who are assessed as vulnerable and at risk of offending.

Youth Connect

This service works with young people aged 11-19 (or 25 with SEND) who are at risk of not engaging and achieving in education or training, as well as helping to improve their physical and mental health and emotional well-being.

'Early Help' means providing effective support to children and young people as soon as needs start to be identified, and to bring about change to prevent these from escalating and leading to poor outcomes. Early Help may occur at any point when needs arise, from pregnancy through to the teenage years and at any stage in adulthood.
