The Audit Commission is an independent public body whose responsibility includes working with local authorities and their partners to improve services for local people. This is done through audit, inspection and research activities. However, the new government has announced its plans to disband the Audit Commission, and that their intention is to have new arrangements in place for auditing England's public bodies by 2012/13.
Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. It contributes to the provision of better education and care through effective inspection and regulation. This is achieved through a comprehensive system of inspection and regulation covering childcare, schools, colleges, children's services, teacher training and youth work. Ofsted lead on the inspection of schools and Children’s Social Care Services within Bath & North East Somerset.
Care Quality Commission (CQC)
The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. It regulates care provided by the NHS, local authorities, private companies and voluntary organisations. It aims to make sure better care is provided for everyone - in hospitals, care homes and people's own homes. It also seeks to protect the interests of people whose rights are restricted under the Mental Health Act.
Customer Service Excellence (CSE)
The Government wants public services that are efficient, effective, excellent, equitable and empowering – with the citizen always at the heart of public service provision. Customer Service Excellence (CSE) has been developed to offer public services a practical tool for driving customer focused change and continuous improvement within their organisation. To demonstrate an organisation is competent in the delivery of customer focused services, CSE offers independent validation of achievement by allowing organisations to seek formal accreditation to the CSE standard.
The Council has successfully achieved accreditation at a corporate level and for each of its customer facing services over the last four years. Accreditation to the CSE standard is reassessed annually and the Council and its services have successfully retained their accredited status each year.
