In the case of a dwelling built since the 1947 Town & Country Planning Act, ‘original’ refers to the dwelling as first built. In the case of a dwellings built prior to the 1947 Act,’ original’ refers to the dwelling as it existed at the time of the Act.

PPG23: Planning & Pollution Control (Feb 1997) at para 1.14 defines pollution in the context of Part I of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) 1990 - 'pollution of the environment is due to the release (into any environmental medium), from any process, of substances which are capable of causing harm to any other living organisms supported by the environment. The EPA Act defines harm as 'harm to the health of living organisms or other interference with the ecological systems of which they form part plus, in the case of man, offence caused to any of his senses or harm to his property.' Forms of environmental pollution can include noise, dust, smell, noxious substances, vibration, light and heat.
